Leon Jamaer joins the Fanatic International Team

di - 28/01/2013

We are happy to report the promotion of German wave star Leon Jamaer to our International Windsurf team. Leon is one of the most talented youngsters in windsurfing and has already been in our National German Team since a few seasons. In 2013 he will finish his studies and focus 100% on windsurfing, where he has already shown great potential in both National and PWA events, with a reputation of one of the most radical “no fear” sailors out there!

Craig Gertenbach, Fanatic Brand Manager: “It´s great to have Leon in our Fanatic International team now. If you ever had the chance to watch him free sailing in pretty much any conditions, your first reaction would be: “that guy is nuts”. When he sails he just goes for it 200% and the energy on his moves is unbelievable. Together with Alessio Stillrich, Arthur Arutkin and Noah Voecker-Roche, we will are building our next wave generation to follow in the footsteps of Victor Fernandez and Klaas Voget.

Leon Jamaer (G-208): “I´m really happy to be part of the International Team now! I hope I can spend in future even more time with my team mates on the water, especially Victor, Klaas, Alessio and Arthur, travel around the world, compete and improve my sailing. I hope I can finish my studies this summer and then start improving my skills throughout the contest season and fully attack the PWA tour.”

How I started Windsurfing: When I was about 10 years I got into windsurfing through my two brothers and loved the sport ever since. I spent my holidays exploring the coastlinesof Denmark, Norway, Scotland, Ireland and France together with my two brothers and their van. When I graduated school I started a journey through Australia and Hawaii to experience real waves. Aside I started more and more to compete. At first at local events – now I do the complete PWA worldtour. Right now windsurfing plays a bigger role in my life than ever before.

My Slogan: You dont go, you won´t know!

INTERVIEW WITH LEON JAMAER
If you ever had the chance to watch Leon Jamaer free sailing in pretty much any conditions, your first reaction would be: “that guy is nuts”. When he sails he gives his 200% and the energy on his moves is unbelievable. He is now 23 and his level on the water is up there with the top guys.

How does it feel to be part of the Fanatic International Team now? It is great! I hope I can spend in future even more time with my team mates on the water and travel around the world, compete and improve my sailing.

What are your plans for this season, for sure not easy to be a lot on the water and still have to finish studies? This winter I wasn´t much on the water but I hope I can finish my studies this summer and then start improving my skills throughout the contest season and fully attack on the PWA tour.

Which goals do you want to reach in 2013? I want to sail all 6 PWA events and end up somewhere top10!

Last year you won the Red Bull Soulwave in Klitmoller, where you competed against team-mate and one of the best sailors on the PWA tour, Klaas Voget, how was it for you? It was a contest I enjoyed to 100 percent. We had very good conditions so I could ride the waves the same way I would have ridden them if I was sailing just by myself. The result was very close and it could have gone either way. That I took the win was maybe it was bit of luck that I was lacking in so many heats before 🙂

Has this victory changed your approach or attitude towards competing in event? Maybe a little bit. I feel in tune with my gear more than ever before and advancing a couple of heats definitely raises your confidence.

We have seen you absolutely ripping during contests and free sailing, you are one of the most spectacular sailors to watch when conditions are tough, but results internationally hasn’t shown it yet, do you think this victory could be your inflexion point to start doing well also on the PWA Tour? You never know. I think to really show a rider’s potential there is not enough stops on the tour. Those few stops are usually dominated by the same few guys and it is hard to become on those few. A couple of good heats in Denmark don’t mean anything here in Pozo. But let´s see when conditions get tough it might be a different story 😉

What do you think you need to improve or master so that the results on this year’s PWA tour will actually match your level of sailing? Maybe surf smarter heats instead of going for broke all the time? 🙂

What is your best memory on a PWA contest up until today? The night session Sylt in 2008 was one of the craziest things I guess. It would be great to do something like that again sometime.

Leon is competing in the Red Bull Storm Chase in Ireland right now – GOOD LUCK!!!
