Your success consists of three letters, your maxim:
Peter: „ The German „TUN“ means „making it „ always happens in the moment, in our presence. Beside „making it“ it is also very important to have time for relaxing, recreation. To live in our high speed world with enourmous pace, it is essential to close your program time by time for inner awareness and silence.“

You are one of the fastest Stand Up Paddlers. How is your success separated in different parts like talent, training or food?
Peter: „For sure it is very important to bring some talent with you, you have deep in your genes. But it is for sure not the most important thing. In Stand Up Paddling you need high endurance abilities and you have to train hard for it, maybe a little different than all the others do. You need to paddle hard and having fun on the water and also beside the water.
It is also essential, that your expectation is not too big, otherwise your trainings system can break down. Ando f course your nutrition program has a high percentage for winning or loosing a race.“

What means „healthy food“ for you?
Peter: „Healthy food means, that my body can efficiency work with the stuff i fill in and gain strength and endurance for my sports program. You need to give up using unhealthy substances like trans fats, raffinated sugars, Aspartam and more. Try to avoid products, which are baken in hot refined oil, or at least reduce it. In all of our western civilization we consume too much refined sugar, which makes the most of us fat and tired.
Some people should not use to much milk products cause of conveying inflammations. I use milk products like some butter, cheese or joghurt, but I don`t drink pure milk and I also avoid cream or mayonnese as I don`t feel well after consumption. Alcohol can also slow down your regeneration process and as a sportsmen you shouldn`t consume too much of it. I Have experience with this stuff so I drank a lot of alcohol in my former days.“

So we don`t comment your former days but want to know, how your nutrition and food program looks like in these days?
Peter: „ The main part of my food is concentrated on natural organic vegetables in all colours, if possible fresh. I also eat bread, noodles or other cereals, which give fast energy, and I like it, my body is used to this stuff. But I don´t eat tons of it, like they told us in sportsscience some years ago.
I am no full vegetarian but I eat less meat or fish, maybe about 4 to 5 times a month. I refuse cheap meat or discounter meat, which is bad quality and sometimes full of antibiotics and other substances, I don´t even want to know. If I am not sutre about the origin of the animals I eat, I don`t eat meat at all. My body gives me the feeling, that I need some animal proteins to be full on in contests and have the hardness to go over the pain barrier. I have reduced my milk usage and feel which improved my resistance for my opinion, so I cannot proof it on the paper but I feel it. I think it is possible to be top in sport also with fully vegane nutrition, but you need much experience and a certain time that your body gets used to it. In sports it is essential to use enough proteines to have enough power. For example plant proteins gained from hemp, pee oder brown rize are the best solution form y power shakes, I use after a hard training. But as you have to know, most of my protein sources are contained in normal food products.“

Your breakfast:
Peter: „ Normally I take some pieces of fruits like bananas, apples beside 2 slices of bread with coconut oil and honey, sometimes I also use organic butter. I am also a big smoothie fan, especially green smoothies with spinache or salad give you the perfect kick start for your morning sessions. Oats and rize milk are also delivering fast energy. Sometimes I go for some eggs, but I don`t eat them like Rocky, so 2 to 3 eggs per week are enough for me.“

Your lunch:
Peter: „ At home we normally eat vegetarian, as most of my family is vegetarian. If I sometimes want to have a piece of meat I cook it form y own and. Salads are our daily meal mixed with high quality olive oil, hemp oil, linseed oil or rapeseed oil. Some vinagre can be sed but is not essential, you can also take some lemon juice and salt. We use grain seeds like Quinoa, Amarantj or buckwheat, which are rich of proteins and glutenfree, which can be an advantage for sportsmen and women. I also love vegetables shortly cooked with only low heat, so the essential ingredients stay inside and don`t get destroyed.“

Your dinner:
Peter: „ Most of the days I take my dinner between 6 and 8 p.m., but sometimes it gets also later, when I have a late trainings session. The quantity is normally not as big like lunch. And I reduce my carbohydrates supply, so at it is better for a calm sleep and it is dangerous to gain too much weight over a season eating big carbohydrate portions at night time. A big plate of noodles is only served till 2 p.m.“

The optimized daily time table in food consumption?
Peter: „ Many studies tell something different so it is not easy to find your own solution. You can read to hold a break for 6 hours between 2 meals which is one extreme. The other extreme tells you to eat 5 to 7 times per day. You can find these informations in national and international papers. Form my opinion a normal person should eat about three times per day, and people have to take care about their carbohydrates consume, which is normally too high and leads to heavy weight and can also lead to diabetes or other deseases.
The harder you train, the more energy and food you need for your body.“

What is not useful for a healthy life?
Peter: “Alcohol has only a very small place and many sportsmen don`t drink any acohol. I stopped drinking alcohol 3 years ago. My body gives me good feedback and my regeneration time feels shorter. Refined sugar can be used in small portions, take care about the hidden sugar in sodas, icecream and sweets.
I try to avoid baken products like „Wiener Schnitzel“ and pommes frites. Sometimes I eat chips cause I like it and I have to be hardened so sometimes a non healthy stuff is no big problem for me.“

What else you take care of?
Peter: „ I take care on a well balanced nutrition with a lot of fresh vegetables, my body gives me good feedback. Beside my basic food I also have space to react on not planned and unexpected things. For example I took two hands of chips between the heats oft he 2014 SUP cross at Payette River Games, cause nothing else was there and I needed fast energy. My body worked on it and I took the 4th place overall ex aequo with SUPerstar Kai Lenny.“

Have you always taken care for the quality of your food?
Peter: „ No, of course not, I had an unhealthy and dangerous lifestyle in my 20s with a high alcohol consumption. 20 to 40 bottles of beer had been the normal weekly amount. Beside this I also smoked nikotin and other funny things, which in the end were not funny at all. Stand Up Paddling helped me getting the right motivation for using essential and good food. I mostly enjoy my training days and I like to be on the water, doesn`t matter what weather I expect. Sometimes it is really shocking for me to see so many people abusing and destroying their bodies, they only have one.“

What is about the rumour, that consuming grain is not really healthy for humans?
Peter: „This is a weird theme and I cannot go for an easy yes or not o this question. Special white flour products should not be used every day in big amounts. We can go for one receipt, the less you do sports, the less your white flour consumption should be, cause our body uses this stuff for producing body fat.

Why do you think milk doesn`t belong to a healthy nutrition?
Peter: „I don`t want to claim, that milk is generally unhealthy. The consumption of milk products can in relationship to a hard and intense trainings program can lead to a reduction of body resistance and you can have more risk for influenzal infections with a high beverage of milk consum.“

Why doesn`t meat belong to a healthy nutrition for the human being?
Peter: „ Also with this theme, I can not give a clear answer like yes or no. There are existing a lot of statistics for both arguments from meat fans and from vegetarians and vegane people, which are very different.“

Peter Bartl, SUP Profi, aus …sterreich,

So green vegetables should be the perfect food for us?
Peter: „Green vegetables contain very important ingredients for a healthy life like vitamines, antioxidants and chlorophyll. In usage with some other healthy nutrition green vegetables are absolutely essential for the human being.“

So you can tell the truth, sometimes a piece of chocolate?
Peter: „ Why not? The only important thing is that you should not get addicted to any product you use. If you have the feeling you really need this product then you have entered the so called vicious circle. You can get weird, hectic and confused and your thougths are concentrating on this product. If you feel this using chocolate and you get also ravenousness you have to take care for sure and then it is better not to use this product either. But if everything is ok with you, using chocolate has antioxxidants which are positive for your body and can also improve your endurance. I use organic cacao powder without refined sugar and milk products. Between endurance training I sometimes use cacao drinks for my carbohydrate supply combined with protein shakes.“

Which important hint can you give to any Stand Up Paddler?
Peter: „Always use high quality nutrition while training, which is easy to digest, especially in a hard trainings period this is maybe the most important hint I can give you. Try to avoid fat cakes, cream cakes, Italian Tiramisu, Profiteroles or stuff like this. It makes you slow and weak. Take a smoothie with coconut milk, rice milk, fruits and ginger. There are so many healthy possibilities to mix a smoothie, just look in the net.
After a long and hard training or after having finished a long day at work, you can go for an organic fruit tea mixed with slices of fresh ginger, which gives you power again and leads to a strong immune system.”
