IFCA Slalom Windsurfing World Championships
Terceira, Azores
5 – 10 May 2014

As some of you already know or might have heard that the IFCA Slalom World Championships for Man and Woman will be happening in Portugal, Azores islands.
We already have a few pre registered competitors and expecting to see more in the next weeks.
We would like to share a few words with you from the events main organizer Carlos Borges a Senior Sailing Instructor in Clube Naval da Praia da Vitoria.
Carlos grew up in Flores, island Azores, since 9 years of age he has been connected with nautical sports. Later he moved to Lisbon to live where he kept his nautical activities such as Sailing and Surfing. Carlos became a professional sailor and has been involved in racing monohulls and multihulls in France, Spain, Caribbean and the USA for a long time.
Years after that he started to work as an delivery skipper, then moved to Cabo Verde as Charter capitain. 1999 was the year that he got invited to work for the Azorean Sailing Association where he was involved in coaching and the organization of sailing events.
Currently working for Clube Naval da Praia Since 2008.

Event organizing:
Carlos Borges is now working for the Azorean Sailing Association and was involved in the organization of the 2001 National Olimpic Class Championship,  2002 420 National Championship, 2003 Optimist National Championship, 2003 Island Games ( European and Dom-Tom Islands), 2005 L’Equipe National Championship, 2005 National Funboard Championship, 2013 Azores European Formula Windsurfing Championship ( Junior, Youth, Master and Grand Master). All events that actually took place in the Azores.

The origins of the Event idea:

It all came from some of the competitors in the European Championship who suggested that it could be a good idea to have a Slalom event on the Island and while we were preparing the proposal for the IFCA Formula Windsurfing Worlds we thought that it was a good idea to host both events together.
Praia da Vitoria, has very good conditions to organize sailing events and it is the best local spot with the best conditions for windsurfing on the Azores islands.
This is simply a great opportunity for the guys who usually compete in both disciplines to experience Terceira in different races formats

The Mission:
To host the IFCA Slalom World Championship is to promote Praia da Vitoria as a good place for windsurfing, the natural conditions are very good, wind blows always and access to the water is very easy. Even some of the people from North Europe can come to Azores for some winter training as our water and air temperature don’t get too cold and even with the stormy conditions it is still safe to sail..

The Expectations:
The IFCA Slalom World Championship will be a very good racing moment in windsurf competition with winds blowing between 15 to 22 knots, in 18 to 19 degrees Celsius water temperatures, surrounded by a beautiful landscape green camps in the middle of pure nature. With great local food and tasty beverages to complement a great and enjoyable stay on the Island.

Your invited because:
It will be a pleasure to receive all competitors in Terceira, we will do the best to give to the windsurfers great moments in and out of water.
We will provide special arrangements for the ones that decide to come earlier to train thus is it important to contact me beforehand to prepare the things in advance.

A special thanks to:
The Azores government “the main sponsor” and TAP-Air Portugal who provided good conditions for the competitors who will travel to Terceira.
I look forward to you all soon.
